                        English 111 Class Evaluation
In Dr. Brandon’s English 111 my classmates and I have learned many new things. Our minds have also been refreshed by many old lessons. We have an awesome teacher who would do make sure we are capable of receiving a passing grade. My teacher is an extremely concerned and helpful teacher. Although he was not perfect, he still made sure all of his instructions were understandable. English 111 will definitely have a great impact in my future career.
The lessons we have learned were all vital and come week by week. The very first lesson we learned was about rhetoric. It is the study on how to become a better communicator. Such as what the author does when he delivers that message to the audience as they receive the author’s crafted messages. The rhetorical triangle was also introduced to us to explain the cycle. This is the first and one of the most valuable lessons in the classroom this semester. While learning more on rhetoric we also learned about the three rhetoric appeals. There is “pathos” which means emotion, and how the author causes the reader to agree by showing his or her feelings toward the article. The second appeal is “logos” which shows the author’s knowledge of the article and the facts he has about it. Usually when an author has facts the reader will agree with him or her. The last appeal is called “ethos.” This appeal is mainly based on credibility, reputation, honesty, and identification which is pretty much experience. People sometimes will trust an article based on a person’s wisdom. These appeals are used while writing a rhetorical analysis. A rhetorical analysis is one’s opinion on another person’s point of view. The study of rhetoric is an extremely important part of my English 111 class.
The next lesson I would like to discuss is learning how to construct a review. When you write a review, you are telling the audience your opinion or experience with an activity. For example, in English 111 my class wrote reviews on activities we were in. The first review was supposed to be based on how you feel towards a movie, a restaurant, an athletic activity, or any other activity. A review does not have to be positive. If you did not enjoy an activity then be truthful to the audience. My movie review was definitely a positive review because I really enjoyed the action and suspense in the movie. But my math tutoring activity assignment for Dr. Brandon was a negative review because the tutoring was not an effective session. It was somewhat a waste of my time. I wrote about how it occurred and what I did and did not like about it. This is an important lesson because my career as a sports journalist will be working with reviews and opinions on activities. Many lessons were important, but this one was a great part of our English 111 class.
Another lesson which was learned is how to do a research paper. The research paper I was to complete in class was about our career choices. While doing a research paper the internet is the main source. First, you research information from various websites. Make sure they are websites that are trusted by many others because if not then the information from that website is possibly not true. Then you have to cite sources where you received the information to not be accused of plagiarism or cheating. Lastly, you will have to just organize the paper in the best possible way you can. This is an effective way to become a talented writer.
All of the assignments will be completed much faster utilizing the writing process. It contains six steps in the process. These six steps are prewriting, drafting, revision, proofreading, publishing, and reviewing. Without the writing process it would be a little more complicated to complete evaluations, reviews, essays, and many more. The six steps of the writing process are all vital steps and are made to create successful papers.
Also, I have more about independent clauses, dependent clauses, subject phrases and much more. Sentences are built up from independent clauses, which is also called a simple sentence and contains a subject and a predicate. For example “The cat is very mean.” The cat is obviously the subject and the predicate is mean. These are all used in the six sentence forms. If you know about independent clauses and all that it is associated with then writing sentences and paragraphs will not take too much effort.
In addition to all the lessons learned in class, I have also learned many simple lessons. One, I was taught to make sure to write my notes the correct way. If the professor writes it on the board, repeats it twice, or simply instructs you to write it on the paper then do so. This will make sure you have all the important notes you need to study for any class. As a student, everyone needs notes to go over for a certain class. Second of all, the art of conversation, which is not as difficult, was also taught to the class. It was simply just talking with a large amount confidence, while at the same time not dominating the entire conversation. He taught us many details, like a stance during the conversation, how to leave a conversation, how to make others feel comfortable and much more. I thought even though the art of conversation was not a challenge, the details he shared with us really help everyone in my class. These lessons will always be kept in mind for my future classes.
English class has already made a big impact in my education, and taught me a great amount of lessons that give me much more knowledge. The class was great although I was late at times. The reason for my tardiness was my bad sleeping pattern. My work schedule did not have a huge effect on my timeliness, but it did take a small toll of my time. I would end up sleeping late every night whether it was because of being at work late, going out with friends, coming home late, or just simply completing homework very late at night. My class started at 11:00 a.m. Sometimes I would come in 5 minutes late between 11:05-11:10, or I would be even later and arrive between 11:22-11:27. I have definitely learned to keep a decent sleeping pattern throughout the semester. If I were to practice resting earlier then I will receive a better outcome for next semester and be on time for every class session.
In conclusion, I will sum it all up with saying I would definitely bring forth these tools of knowledge along with me. In the future, I plan on enrolling in Professor Brandon’s English 112 class for the spring semester. It is fantastic being that I learned the study of rhetoric, writing reviews, analysis, evaluations, and research papers. Next semester’s English 112 should most likely be a breeze, I would recommend Dr. Brandon’s class to anyone because it will have them prepared to be independent and successful in their career choice, and most importantly their lives. This English 111 class helped me to make decisions concerning my future, and I believe I have picked the correct path. I thank my instructor Professor Brandon for all the knowledge he has shared with my class and I.

                                    The Writing Process
In English 111 there is an effective process I learned called the writing process. Dr. Brandon showed this to the class so we could become better writers. This process includes 6 easy steps. It really had a good effect on the way I write and the timeliness of my process. This writing process will also help me in the future with my career choice as a sports journalist. If I continue utilizing the writing process, writing essays will be an effortless task.
The very first step within the writing process is prewriting. This part of the writing process is where I will discover everything I could possibly say. I research my entire genre, which means look at every possible idea on my paper. I also research my audience, meaning I make sure I analyze who I am writing this paper for or who will be viewing it. An important strategy used is the mind mapping strategy. I put one idea in the mind map, and then from there many more ideas will come from that main idea. This helps me with thinking about every possible idea for the paper. This beginning step is a very important step in preparing a top notch paper.
Next, is the drafting part of the process. This is the portion where my ideas will be manipulated as I continue with the writing process. Usually while drafting I will most likely find a fair amount of mistakes. I just write down my ideas that I feel should be on my paper. This will be so they could be manipulated later on down the line. This is also an important part of the process because it will help make sure my ideas will be thought about.
Thirdly, there is the revision part of the process. This process really makes a difference in the structure of the paper. This is where you will be adding, cutting and reorganizing your sentences. Most likely it will change for the better. In this part of the process my focus is on producing a near final draft. This is the halfway mark into completing the process.
Afterwards, the following step is proofreading and editing. This is actually where I would do the most formatting, spell corrections, and also grammar. I also ensure that it is a proper presentation. This is the point where I want this paper to become almost perfect. Once I reach this step I am almost pretty much complete.
Lastly, is the combined step of delivering and reviewing the paper. This step is just reading over the entire paper, and making sure you correctly publish it. I believe this is definitely the most vital step in the process. If you do not deliver then you will receive no credit. After I am done with this last part I have completed the process. If all these steps are finished, and thurally reviewed, I will have no problems while doing an essay using the writing process.

                                                 Career Choice Research Paper

In English 111 class with Dr. Brandon, we were instructed to construct a research paper about the career we plan to pursue in. If I was to choose my career choice right this second, I would decide to become a Journalist. It seems to be an extremely entertaining job, although it is a job that will keep me occupied all the time. There are parts of the job that will be fit for me, but there are also parts that will not benefit me. I have done some research to determine whether I like the job or not. I think this is the career that is best suited for my personality.
A journalist or reporter gathers information from sources about a subject and shares it with the world. (Solis, 927) There are many responsibilities also while doing Journalism. First of all you have to ensure you deliver the correct information. If you are not collecting legit and truthful information then you will cause people to believe the wrong facts. Next, you have to “research topics and stories that an editor or news director has assigned to them.” (Solis, Pg. 927) This is part of the reason why it is so fast paced. Thirdly, reporters also “interview people who have information related to a story or article.” (Solis, Pg. 927) This is one of the reasons journalists are not usually in their offices. Reporters have jobs that take lots of time and dedication.
Journalists have many benefits with their occupation. According to the information I gathered from different sources, it has a substantial amount of income. To be precise sports journalist could possibly make between 18,000-75,000 a year. Most of the time a journalist can make about 36,000 a year which is 17.31 an hour. (Solis, 927) These are one of the most important reasons I would enjoy becoming a journalist.
There is also a terrible disadvantage in being a journalist. The employment rate is expected to decline by 8 percent from 2010 to 2020, because readership and viewership of newspapers and televisions are decreasing. (930, Solis) This will definitely lower the possibility of any individual in pursuit of this career. These are one of the biggest downfalls of attempting to become a journalist. Despite the chances becoming slim in being a journalist, it will not prevent me from trying.
To be able to work in this field it is better to have some experience. It can make it easier rather than being introduced as a newcomer. It is preferred that you have a bachelor’s degree in either English or political science, or Journalism. (Solis, 929) I have also researched some internships and jobs in Richmond and other areas. Jobs such as Richmond times Dispatch, Media General Inc., and many more. (Virginia Wizard) The environment of this occupation is very busy. Some of the assignments include going out of country. Journalists possibly stay in a country for a week depending on the job that has to be done. It is a very busy environment, but as a reporter you have to be able to keep up with the pace. (occupational outlook handbook)
In conclusion, many great accomplishments and achievements can come out of this career. A journalist is a challenging, and a difficult job to manage, but with confidence, work ethic, and determination it can surely happen. My future career goal is to be a successful journalist/reporter and to be able to manage my career for as long as I would like.

English 111 Rhetorical Analysis

Jabari Stafford
Professor Stephen Brandon

                                                Rhetorical Analysis
“Decline and fall of America starts at the bus stop.” This argument was published on September 12, 2012. The author’s argument is based on the way America is pretty much becoming “soft”, in the educational realm. This argument is not considered completely persuasive to me because some parts are and some parts are not, but it is insightful. The overall structure of this argument is basically acknowledging the differences in the life of youth nowadays, compared to the upbringing of past generations.
He says the downfall of America begins at the bus stops. Parents are doing too much and being over protective of their children. He also gives examples of these actions. For example, Hinkle says,” going to the bus stop used to be a stoic ordeal, not a festive occasion. Your folks might march you to the proper spot, if it was your first time, but after that you were on your own.” He also said something about how parents are already outside waiting for the bus afterschool to get their children. This all ties into the reasons children of America are nowadays so-called ‘soft.” From his article it is expressed thoroughly that he believes there is a widening gap in the mental, moral, and ethical strength between generations. He addresses modifications in school systems to accommodate children’s safety and comfortability due to the possibility of recognized dangers of one drastic exposure of its existence. The luxury in some children’s lives cause them to be weak. Being they have not experienced enough hardship or struggle and have been pampered for the majority of their lives, the results show. The children who live in privation and actually experience hard times become fighters and persevere through their troubles. “When those of us of a certain age were growing up, playgrounds were surfaced with gravel. Sometimes even scrap metal and broken glass. It hurt like heck, but it made a man out of you.”
The overall argument is characterized as mostly logos and ethos, since it is mainly based on Hinkle’s logic, facts, and experience. Pathos was never used in this argument, being that pathos is emotion. If I was to show someone else this argument they would possibly agree with my analysis of the argument. I do not remember the author switching appeals much, he remained with ethos and logos throughout the whole argument.
In conclusion, I do not fully agree with this argument. Many individuals have been through their fair share of struggle, but it does not make everyone tough, or stronger than another individual. Overall, America is definitely not becoming “weak” or “soft”. This is not the strongest argument in my opinion. It did not have an appeal effective enough to lead me towards agreement with the author of the article.

Englsih 111 Activity Review (Math Tutoring)

                                                                Math Tutoring Activity
There are many ways that you can ensure a quality experience that comes to furthering your education, one of those ways is tutoring. My major, liberal arts requires certain classes. The classes I decided to take are MTE 6-9, English 111, and SDV 100. In my math class I have had a sizeable amount of difficulty understanding some of the work. So to alleviate the level of stress due to difficulty I signed up for tutoring sessions in the Academic Support Center. The Support Center helped me find a tutor which turned out to be another student who attends J Sargeant Reynolds Community College. I was expecting another professor or instructor to assist me. My appointment with the tutor would be, September 5th, 2012, at ten o’clock AM.  This was the best time for my tutoring session because my MTE class starts at eleven o’clock. I would have an hour to go over problems with the tutor. The tutoring session took place in the library. I did appreciate the fact that it was on time and I did not have to wait for anyone to prepare for the session. I did not have a personal computer so we utilized one of the many computers in the library. Usually when a tutor helps you with a class it has a great effect on your overall understanding of the subject, but in this particular session, the results were not good. There were many problems that could not be fixed during the tutoring session. At J sergeant Reynolds Community College the tutor can only help with the work that has already been completed. Therefore, she could do but so much to help me with my assignment. So after being told I cannot be helped with my homework that is not completed, we went over problems I did complete. The problems I completed were already corrected so I did not feel there was any reason to go back and do them again. But I did not want to completely waste an hour of what is supposed to be tutoring, so we just practiced the homework problems I completed from before. I explained to her how the tutoring did not help me, because I would be leaving the session the exact same way I came in. Although, it was not helpful, I did appreciate the effort from the tutor. I am sure if she was allowed to help me with problems I struggled with, then she would. I honestly would not recommend the tutoring to the students who need help with an assignment they cannot finish because they would be kind of wasting their time. I would recommend tutoring to the students who failed a test or homework and need help to comprehend or understand what they got wrong. If I was to go again, hopefully it would help me lessen the difficulty of the assignment and make it much easier for me the next time, but I highly doubt that it would occur.

                                                Takers Review (The Movie)
There are a number of interesting movies that have been displayed the past years. In my opinion, the most captivating and recent movie was “Takers.” It was an extremely action packed movie. It was released in theatres August twenty-seventh, two-thousand ten. Every scene would catch the viewer’s attention. One of the actors I noticed in the movie was T.I. There were also many other great talented actors, such as Idris Elba, Shamar Moore, and Paul Walker. This movie really provides an intense sequence of events that keeps viewers at the edge of their seat.
This movie features a group of bank robbers who are included in many extraordinary robberies. They come together for one last crime. But they are challenged by the authorities who try to prevent their misconduct, an instead of the fortune, they find devastating events. The action in this movie was phenomenal. One of the scenes I remember included the bank robbers and a group of Russian guys they had a conflict with. The scene resulted in a shootout between the two groups, and the majority of the Russian gang faced death due to the gunshots. One of the bank robbers also was killed, this was an extremely suspenseful scene in the film, because the death of AJ, the bank robber was completely unexpected because it was quite early in the movie.
